"What's for Dinner Honey?"
'Tis the season of open houses, parties, and impromptu get togethers. A delicious new appetizer is always in order. So Signe, our Farmers Market foodie headed out and asked Nan and Anne at La Petite Maison what they are serving this season [and perhaps she did a bit of holiday shopping as well...]
You have to know that Nan came back from Paris enchanted with fig jam. Found it at chic bistros and tiny markets and now carries it in the store. So, here are three appetizers featuring the delicious fig graciously given by les femmes at La Petite Maison:
Charcuterie Plate from Nan
Start with a slate or cheese board and add....
A log of Chevre
Fromage Bleu - Bleu d'Auvergne
Sliced Prociutto
Fresh figs cut in wedges or fig jam [They sell the jam at La Petite Maison, mais oui!]
Provencal olives [with a small bowl for pits]
Pate de Campagne
Serve with a multiseed flat bread or sliced french baguette
Baked Brie with Fig Jam from Nan
Small wheel or wedge of Brie
A sheet of crescent rolls
Wrap the Brie in crescent rolls, bake at 375 for 10 minutes. Turn over and spread top and sides with fig jam. Bake for another 10 minutes.
Flat Bread with Fig Jam, Prosciutto and Caramelized Onions from Nan
Pizza crust or puff pastry of your choice
fig jam
4 medium red onions
prosciutto fried to crisp
Carmelize onions. Spread fig jam over the top or the pizza crust or puff pastry, sprinkle with thinly sliced prosciutto and carmelized onions [or thinly sliced raw red onions] and bake at 375 for about 15 minutes or until brown, cut into small slices.
To carmelize onions: Slice onions into very thin slices. Heat olive oil in a heavy skillet. Add onions and a small amount of sugar and slowly cook over medium heat. Cook until onions are caramel colored, stirring often, 30-40 minutes. For more flavor, add a touch of balsamic vinegar at the end of cooking.
Find figs at the Fruit Center, they also carry Dalmatia fig jam. Find all the cheeses, pates, and prosciutto at Bloomy Rind. La Petite Maison carries fig jam and the charmante trays, dishes & knives to serve it... Champagne is the perfect accompaniment to fig, so....cheers!
