"What's for Dinner Honey?"

One would very much like to just hang with Denise, she makes an art of putting people at ease.  Walk into her ski house and there's always a stew simmering, a batch baking, and a glass of wine at hand.  She may have a home chock full of kids, and sports, and projects, but nothing's ever too much for her.  And she means it when she asks how you are- she settles in to listen and share.  So genuine, so self-effacing, so....Midwestern.

So when it comes to apple-picking time, and a no-fuss apple crisp, Denise is our go-to.

 

The Best Apple Cherry Crisp from Denise Selhausen

Preheat oven to 375 degrees

Pare, core and slice 4 cups of tart apples {I like Granny Smith}
Season with 2 tablespoons lemon juice or kirsch
1 cup of tart red cherries {pitted}
Toss into 10” pie pan or baking pan

In a separate bowl mix the following ingredients together with a pastry blender or fork:
1 cup of flour
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup of softened butter
1 cup rolled oats {not instant}
½ teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
Variation: I add walnuts to the mixture after blended.

The mixture must be lightly worked so that it doesn’t become oily.  Spread the crumbly ingredients over the apple/cherry mixture.
Bake about 30 minutes.  Serve warm with vanilla ice cream of course!
