Middle/Secondary Schools
Hingham Middle School– Public
Hingham Middle School is comprised of grades 6-8 with approximately 300 kids per grade. When your child arrives here in 6th grade they aren’t just thrown to the wolves. The kids are divided into teams (with fun names like Beachcombers or Starfish), their lockers are located together, your child stays with that group all day, and they travel together from one class to the next.
In 7th and 8th grade they are given more independence. They start the day with their homeroom group every morning then switch classes independently. The staff is wonderful and dedicated, starting with Mr. Boddie, the principal who runs the school with a combination of purpose, accountability, humor and accessibility making these adolescent years so much more bearable. Because getting your kids to tell you what happened in school that day is more information than even the CIA can gather...
Derby Academy– Private (co-ed)
Here the "middle school" runs from grades 4-6th and the "upper school" from 7-8th. Located on a 27 acre campus in residential Hingham, Derby offers a smaller classroom setting than that you would find at the public school. The entire school is roughly 300 (pk-8) kids while the public school is 300 per grade! Depending on what kind of education you had growing up, either scenario can be a shock. Afternoon sports begin in 6th grade and early dismissal on Fridays. For kids it can’t get much better than that right? www.derbyacademy.org
Notre Dame Academy– Private (Girls)
Located on 68 acres off Main Street virtually next to the Middle School, Notre Dame Academy is a girls, Catholic, college- preparatory school for grades 9-12. Non-Boarding, girls come from over 40 towns throughout the area to participate in an education comprised of academics, social responsibility and personal faith. www.ndahingham.com
St. Paul– Private (co-ed)
St. Pauls schcool here in Hingahm has students coming from all over the South Shore. The campus is smack in the middle of town, with not much green space to speak of however it is proud to be called a "green school" and works with Holly Hill farm to enrich the green experience. This Catholic school offers a strong academic program for boys and girls from a prek program, a full day kindergarten thru 8th grade. 100% of 8th graders who applied were accepted into the Catholic High School of their choice. 7th and 8th graders travel to Washington DC or Philadelphia for their spring trip and the STEM Program {science, technology, engineering, and math}is the coursework focus for grades 4th-8th. Small classes are a plus but because the school is only 240 students (k-8) it has limitations on the extra-curricular activities available. {Betty Tip: they have a seizmograph sponsored by Boston College and Weston Obervatory in their science lab}. www.stpaulschoolhingham.com
